    EFM Reading Curriculum:

    PRODUCT CATEGORIES

You may take advantage of this curriculum as early as Pre-school. Read the Alphabet Tales like you would any other story book, letting the child just enjoy the stories and gain familiarity with the letter shapes. Sight Words may be displayed and talked about as the child shows interest.

Kindergarten is a wonderful time to start the lessons. Care must be taken to not rush or pressure the child. It will not be a surprise (if you truly are letting the children set the pace) that you will find yourself starting lesson 20 by Thanksgiving. This is not a problem! The contents of section one (lessons 1-30) are vital in that they set the foundation for the child's ability to do well in reading. They will only be working with eight sounds to that point, but will be learning so much about the use of sounds to make words. By the time they reach lesson 20, they will have learned a handful of sight words in addition to their eight sounds, and yet they will be able to start reading the books! By the end of section one, children will have successfully read seven titles!

If you use this curriculum in 1st grade, plan to go through the lessons as they are laid out, however, the pace will likely pick up. Still, it is critical to not move to the pace of the speediest of your children. If you are teaching small group, take your advanced students as far as they can go in terms of the sound spellings they can learn. But always keep in mind that all your kids can learn...the focus must be on all children succeeding. Once you are finished with Section 1, the pace will automatically begin to speed up. By Section 3, you will feel like you are rolling downhill on wheels.

For any age child who is struggling, this curriculum is valuable. Start at the beginning and use all the visuals and motions and hints and helps provided. Focus on patterns in words (ex: all the words you can find that contain the spelling pattern you are working on) and prepare to see some success!
