This book is full of visual games and tools that can be introduced as early as preschool. There are stylized numbers, a song that helps children relate number symbols with number names, and then there is the foundation of the method, which is the visuals and patterns for the facts to 10.

Children do not compute by "counting up" but rather by the "see, say, and do" method. The visual background they receive allows them this fluency with their facts.  This book forms the basis for the learning in the second and third books.

How this approach differs from Touch Math. Our approach uses visual patterns to teach "how much" a number is or how much a sum of numbers is. Children literally see and say and avoid the time-consuming counting up. Once children have to do more advanced math, if they are not fluent with their facts, they will find it more difficult to keep up.

Once children know their facts on sight (very much like we want them to know their sight words!) they are ready for multi-digit computation. The magic of this book and what sets it apart from other books is that all computation is based on the facts to 10! Students never have to add any facts larger than 1+9,2+8, 3+7, 4+6,  or 5+5, nor subtract anything other than 10 minus the numbers 1-9!

Children love doing big problems using this method because they no longer have to tediously count on their fingers. They can literally look at the problem and write the answer.

"My own struggles with math during my elementary years fueled my passion to discover ways of teaching that would result in success for all students...I've learned that my own strongly visual view is a great enhancement to the understanding of math...I have come to believe that children who are highly visual also tend to be global, random, & kinesthetic..."  Page vii

The third book in the series is also based on patterns found in number arrays. It is very interesting that although to many adults, the approaches used in the books seem foreign (NOT the way WE were taught!) children latch on to them very quickly. Again, this approach is based on number patterns learned in books one and two. When numbers and answers to number calculations are arrayed in rows of five, amazing patterns emerge, which help students remember their computation facts. Because children enjoy patterns and puzzles and stories, using this series does result in their saying, "More math, please!"

"[The author] does an excellent job of incorporating the vast variety of learning styles within her math curriculum. Visual learners will see numbers and computations through pictures, auditory learners will hear concepts put to music, and kinesthetic learners will be involved in hands-on activities. All of these activities connect learning to concepts in a meaningful and concrete way for children." Kim Zuidema, Teacher, Rockford, MI

Right-Brained Multiplication & Division - teach with visuals, story, patterns, and more
Customer reviews: MARVELOUS!!!!! We just started using this book last week, and we have had wonderful success so far! My 2nd and 3rd graders actually look forward to math now...which is totally amazing because they have always "hated" math! This is definitely money well spent...especially for kids who are right-brained and/or don't enjoy memorizing math facts! :D

A customer has added a review to their 5 star rating for Right-Brained Multiplication & Division
Review Text:
Seriously wish I had ordered this years ago. Well worth every penny! Used it as a refresher for my 7th grader, and to help my 4th grader who was having trouble remembering facts for longer than a week. She now understands multiplication, and since division is taught at the same time she no longer cries at the thought of it!
